how to read your birth chart — the guide that actually makes sense

birth charts look like chaos. they’re not. here’s how to actually read yours, explained like a human and not a 400-page textbook.

what is a birth chart?

a birth chart (also called a natal chart) is a map of the sky at the exact moment you were born. it shows where every planet was, what sign they were in, and what area of your life they were activating.

think of it as a cosmic screenshot. the universe pressed pause the second you took your first breath and that snapshot became your energetic blueprint.

to calculate yours you need three things: your birth date, your birth time (as exact as possible), and your birth location. the birth time is critical because it determines your rising sign and your house placements. without it, you’re working with an incomplete chart.

don’t have your birth time? check your birth certificate. call the hospital. ask your mom. it matters that much.

the 4 layers of a birth chart

every birth chart has four layers. once you understand what each layer does, reading a chart becomes straightforward:

the planets = WHAT energy is operating. (love, anger, communication, identity...)

the signs = HOW that energy expresses. (boldly, cautiously, intensely, dreamily...)

the houses = WHERE in your life it plays out. (career, relationships, home, creativity...)

the aspects = how the planets TALK TO EACH OTHER. (harmony, tension, amplification, challenge...)

so when someone says “i have venus in scorpio in the 8th house square pluto,” they’re saying: my love energy (venus) expresses with intensity (scorpio) in the area of deep intimacy (8th house) and it’s in tension with my transformation planet (square pluto). see? it’s a sentence, not a code.

the planets — what

each planet rules a different part of your personality and life. here’s what each one does:

Sun

your core identity

who are you?

your sun sign is what most people know. it’s your ego, your identity, the core of who you are. but here’s the thing — your sun sign is only about 10% of your chart. it’s the main character energy but it’s not the whole story. think of it as your conscious self.

Moon

your emotional inner world

how do you feel?

your moon sign is arguably more important than your sun for understanding yourself. it’s your emotional nature, your instincts, what you need to feel safe. it’s how you process feelings and what you do when nobody’s watching. your moon sign is the real you.

Rising (Ascendant)

your outer appearance & first impression

how do people see you?

your rising sign is the mask you wear. not in a fake way — it’s how you naturally present to the world. it’s your vibe when you walk into a room. it also determines your entire house system, which is why knowing your exact birth time matters so much.

Venus

love, beauty, values

how do you love and what do you find beautiful?

venus is how you love, what you’re attracted to, what you value, and your aesthetic. it’s your love language at a cosmic level. your venus sign tells you more about your romantic patterns than any attachment style quiz ever could.

Mars

drive, desire, anger

how do you go after what you want?

mars is your drive, your ambition, your anger, and yes — your sexual energy. it’s how you fight, how you pursue, and what makes your blood boil. mars tells you what motivates you and how you take action when you actually care about something.

Mercury

communication & thinking

how do you think and communicate?

mercury rules your mind. how you process information, how you speak, how you text (yes really). mercury in gemini texts back instantly. mercury in capricorn takes 3 business days. mercury also rules learning style, humor, and how you argue.

Jupiter

luck, growth, expansion

where does life reward you?

jupiter is the planet of abundance. wherever jupiter sits in your chart is where things come easily to you. it’s your built-in blessing. jupiter in the 7th? relationships are your gift. jupiter in the 10th? career success comes naturally. jupiter is where the universe said “i got you.”

Saturn

discipline, karma, hard lessons

where does life challenge you?

saturn is the tough love planet. wherever saturn sits is where you have to put in the work. it feels restrictive until you realize it’s making you stronger. saturn in the 7th? relationships require serious effort. saturn in the 10th? career success is earned, not given. saturn’s rewards are worth it but they’re never free.

Uranus

rebellion, innovation, sudden change

where are you unconventional?

uranus is the planet of chaos and genius. it’s where you refuse to conform and where sudden shifts happen in your life. uranus doesn’t do things gradually. it does them overnight. wherever uranus sits is where you’re a little bit of a rebel.

Neptune

dreams, illusion, spirituality

where do you idealize or escape?

neptune is beautiful and terrifying. it’s your imagination, your spirituality, your intuition. but it’s also where you wear rose-colored glasses. neptune makes things feel magical but can also make them foggy. wherever neptune sits is where you might be living in a fantasy.

Pluto

transformation, power, obsession

where do you experience the deepest change?

pluto is the planet of death and rebirth. not literal death — transformation. wherever pluto sits in your chart is where you experience the most intense evolution. it’s where things get destroyed and rebuilt. it’s heavy but it’s powerful. pluto placements are where your superpower lives.

the “start here” order

if you’re looking at your chart for the first time, don’t try to read everything at once. you’ll spiral. instead, read your placements in this order:

1. Sun — your core identity. the foundation.

2. Moon — your emotional self. the inner you.

3. Rising — how others see you. your vibe.

4. Venus — how you love. your romantic patterns.

5. Mars — how you take action. your drive and desire.

6. Mercury — how you think and communicate.

7. everything else — jupiter, saturn, outer planets, houses, aspects, asteroids.

those first 5 placements will tell you more about yourself than years of therapy. i’m only half joking. once you understand your big 5, the rest of the chart starts making sense naturally.

the aspects — how planets talk to each other

aspects are the angles between planets. they show how different parts of your personality interact with each other. some aspects create harmony. some create tension. both are important.

conjunction

two planets sitting together. their energies merge and amplify each other. powerful and intense. the planets become one force.

opposition

180°

two planets facing off across the chart. tension, awareness, push-pull energy. like a tug of war that forces growth. challenging but creates balance when you learn to hold both sides.

trine

120°

easy flow. the planets just GET each other. natural talent and effortless connection. the catch? trines can make you lazy because things come too easily. don’t take them for granted.

square

90°

friction. the planets clash and create tension that demands action. squares are hard but they’re also where your biggest growth happens. the discomfort is the point. it pushes you to evolve.

sextile

60°

gentle opportunity. similar to a trine but you have to actually put in a little effort to activate it. the universe opens the door but you still have to walk through it.

beyond the basics

once you have the planets, signs, houses, and aspects down, there’s a whole other layer waiting for you: asteroids. eros (desire), juno (commitment), lilith (shadow), chiron (wound/healing), and dozens of love asteroids that add incredible nuance to your chart.

most apps don’t include these. ours does. because a chart without asteroids is like reading a book with half the chapters missing.

but start with the basics first. get comfortable with your big 5. then go deeper. there’s no rush. your chart isn’t going anywhere.

pro tips for reading your chart

don’t panic about “bad” placements. there are no bad placements. there are challenging ones. and the challenging ones are where your biggest growth and power live. (we wrote a whole article on why “toxic” placements are superpowers.)

look at your chart as a whole. don’t fixate on one placement. every part of your chart works together. a scorpio venus means something different with a sagittarius moon than with a cancer moon. context is everything.

your chart is not your destiny. it’s your toolkit. it shows you what you’re working with, not what you’re doomed to be. free will always plays a role. the chart shows the potential. you choose what to do with it.

birth time accuracy matters. even a few minutes difference can change your rising sign and shift all your house placements. if you’re not sure about your birth time, get as close as possible.
